Notes

Ray M Thompson was the writer for a "Know Your Coast" column in the Biloxi/Gulfport Daily Herald. The Hancock County Historical Society in Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi provides on their website a transcription of an article he wrote in 1959, entitled "The Handwriting on the Window." This article concerns Virginia.

The Carroll family had once owned a plantation home in Bay Saint Louis and Virginia had scratched a date on the glass of one of the windows. The date was October 6, 1872. Could this be significant to the birth of Joseph? The 1900 census has him born Mar 1872.

Returning to the story, it is a bit confusing because it tells of a visitor to the house around 1938, saying she is the sister of Cecile Airey, but then later in the story it says the visitor was Virginia's granddaughter. If the visitor were Cecile's sister, she would of course be Virginia's daughter--not her granddaughter.

The news article that was written about this visit was published around twenty years after the fact--in 1959--and obviously a detail or two was not related correctly.

So what we have is either another daughter for Virginia (that survived to adulthood) or, what I believe to be more likely, the visitor was Cecile's niece. From what I've researched so far, Cecile had no sister that lived past 8 years old.

According to St Joseph Cemetery record transcriptions, a 'Loulie Airey' died in Bay St Louis in September of 1869 and was moved to the Airey-Parker burial site in New Orleans in October 1874. This is probably Louisa, whose name is listed there as a child of Virginia and Thomas. The record does not provide her age at the time of death.
