The Introduction
I'm Cheryl and my youngest son is Alex. He had just turned eleven when our adventure started and was twelve by the time it ended. My work is on the computer and he's homeschooled. We'd had dreams of traveling for years and then we finally decided to do something about it.
At first it was just a camping trip that turned into a road trip. Then another road trip, then another. Then we made the decision to travel out west. And what an excellent time we had!
It was like going for a swim on a sweltering hot day in water that's a little cold. First we got our feet wet, then we waded in to our waist, and then we dove completely under!
It was just the two of us, if you don't count the cats. That was sometimes scary, but mostly not. You'll read about a couple of times when I thought we must be absolutely crazy for doing this, but those times didn't stop us. And obviously, we're here to tell the story, so we must've made it through okay.
There's not much I can say about us before you get started reading. We are in a word - different. Many things came together to provide us with the incentive to go. A sudden realization of how short life really is was a big contributor. I had lost my sister to cancer and then lost my brother just two and a half months later, right after our first road trip.
We caught a lot of flack from the people that loved us. Some were worried, some were really mad at us, and some just wanted to have us near. They thought we were being selfish and being reckless, but we were really just being and enjoying the heck out of that state.
About the cats:
Three of our four cats had not been allowed outside. We had raised them all from tiny kittens. They thought we were their parents. That may be why they followed us like they did. And except for a time or two with Elrond, the one that had been outside before, they never ran off. They got used to the truck and they stayed with it, or with us, anywhere we went.
Enjoy the adventures of Cheryl and Alex (and the cats).
