1. familysearch.org - Birth, death, census, marriage, christening and more. United States plus many other countries. They will sometimes have images to accompany the transcription record. A lot of the census records have images. Census years include 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930.

   • familysearch.org/s/collection/list - A list of their collections, by state and country.
2. rootsweb.ancestry.com - Mailing lists, message boards, family trees and lots of helpful genealogy information. If you put the first and last name in the 'search rootsweb.com' box on the home page, it will give you a complete list of databases where the name appears.

   • wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ - WorldConnect family tree.
3. civilwar.nps.gov/cwss/ - Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System - A cooperative effort by the National Park Service (NPS) and several other public and private partners. Computerized database includes names and basic information from 6.3 million soldier records.
4. usgenweb.org - The USGenWeb Project - Volunteers dedicated to making genealogy information free for everyone.
5. usgwarchives.net - Search the entire project or individual states, which are updated nightly.

   • files.usgwarchives.net - Browse the files.
6. aad.archives.gov/aad/ - The National Archives Access to Archival Databases. Search Civil War, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Cold War and Diplomatic Records. Also search millions of records from ships passenger lists - Russians to America 1834 - 1897, Passengers Who Arrived at the Port of New York During the Irish Famine 1846 - 1851, Immigration of Germans to the United States 1850 - 1897, Immigration of Italians to the United States 1855 - 1900.
7. findagrave.com/ - Find A Grave - Millions of headstone transcriptions and images, with memorials, family notes and family links for many of them.
8. archive.org/details/us_census - Internet Archive - United States Census Collection - Scanned images from the 1790 to 1930 censuses. Public domain. Census records from other countries are also available here. You can't search the images by name, but if you know the time and area you are looking for, you can browse the images online or you can download the set.
9. ehistory.osu.edu - Full online searchable texts of books like 'The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies' (Complete 128 Volumes), Battles & Leaders of the Civil War, U.S. Marines in Vietnam: The Advisory & Combat Assistance Era, 1954-1964, Civil War Letters and Diaries, and more.
10. us-census.org/index.htm - The USGenWeb Census Project - Transcriptions and some census images.
11. uscemeteryproj.com/ - United States Cemetery Project - Free access to cemetery photos and obituaries for genealogical purposes. This site has been working since 2005 getting headstones photographed and put online. Some states are barely worked on - others have cemeteries photographed in nearly every county.
12. genealogytrails.com/ - Genealogy Trails - Genealogical and historical data for the free use of all researchers. Obituaries, birth and death records, newspaper transcriptions, history, wills, marriages, cemeteries, more.
13. ahgp.org/ - American History and Genealogy Project - An unincorporated not-for-profit network of independent sites devoted to history and genealogy. Covers all fifty states, plus Canada.
14. If your local library has a large enough genealogy section, they may have subscriptions to some of the major paid sites, like ancestry.com and heritagequestonline.com. You can use these sites free as long as you are a member of the library. Heritagequest Online can be used from home with a password, but I believe you can only use ancestry.com while you are at the library.
