Notes
John Frank was called Frank by his first family and sometimes JF.
There is a story in 'Nicholas Cobb's Descendants' about Frank and his first wife, Agnes, fighting over the custody of their youngest child, Sammie. Agnes lead a mule-drawn wagon to Frank's, thinking he was not at home, and tried to take Sammie. Frank was not gone, as she had thought, and when he saw what she was doing, "the race was on." The story doesn't tell us who won the race, but it appears Agnes won out in the end. Sam, 5 years old, is listed with Frank in the 1920 Madison County census (January 31) and Sammie, 5 years old, is listed with Agnes in the 1920 Haywood County census (February 10). He is listed with his mother in Haywood County in 1930.
Frank married Bertha and started a second family and then married Louise and had a third set of children. Frank had sixteen children total (that I know of so far) with the three wives.
Mary Frances Castellaw's mother is probably Bertha McBride. Mary is listed as Bertha and Frank's child in the 1930 census (transcription). Bertha died in 1931. Louise may have raised Mary as her own from that point on.
It is possible that Mary is Louise McBride's child. Mary's obituary gives Louise's Dutton, Walters and Mosier children as her siblings.
Louise was Bertha's daughter. She was Frank's stepdaughter and then became his third wife after the death of her mother.
About Bertha--The informant on Bertha's death certificate was J L Castellaw, which I am certain was John Frank, as J L Castellaw is also the name given for her husband. Bertha's mother's name is listed as "don't know", father's name "don't know". Cause of death was "unknown; no doctor; said to be cancer of uterus." Burial or cremation in Haywood County, no cemetery listed. Date of death is listed as October 15, 1931.
Bertha is listed in the 1900 Haywood County census with William and Mary as her parents. Her birth is recorded as July 1896. She is three years old, with a younger brother born Dec 1899. John Frank gives her birthdate as July 15, 1899 on her death certificate. I believe the birth year Frank gave is incorrect.
About Louise--Louise may have been born Beula Louise. The 1930 Madison census (transcription) has Bula L Castellaw, 16 years old. Louise was born February 24, 1913 and died May 23, 1965. She is buried in the Mt Moriah Cemetery in Crockett County. The name on her headstone is Louise Duncan Dutton.
This is part of an email I received from Martha Jean Wilson Mann, who knew Mary Frances Castellaw and Helen Castellaw and believed them both to be the daughters of Louise and Frank:
"I knew Frances Mosier personally, Helen Jaynes also. They are wonderful people. Louise married a Mr. Dutton and had a son, called Junior, never knew his name, then she had a daughter, Jewel Fay Walters (married a Tritt) a beautiful girl, she then had two sons, Gene and Ray Mosier. They were the children of Floyd Mosier, brother to Lloyd Mosier who married Frances.
Louise was the daughter of Bertha McBride. Her father's name (it is said) was Duncan."
