Notes
John lost his first wife, Margaret, and all three of their children in April and May of 1870. They were included in the 1870 census, however, which was enumerated in August because they died in the census year.
Joseph Dawson Castellaw was not in the 1870 census with John. He would have been about two years old. At first I thought he might be staying with someone else while John grieved or possibly to protect him from a sickness that may have killed the rest of the family.
I found a Joseph, age 2, living with John's brother, George Castellaw, and his wife Mary in 1870. George and Mary did not have a Joseph listed with them in 1880 and the 1910 census shows George and Mary being married 44 years with no children born to them and none living. I thought maybe the Joseph living with them in 1870 could be John's son.
Later, I found a guardian bond renewel in Crockett county by a J E Castellaw for a Joe D Castellaw. The first name of Joe D's deceased father was left blank--his last name was Castellaw. Perhaps the first name is listed on an earlier bond. I checked John's neighbors in the 1880 census and found that the other two men on the bond, W H Poindexter and J C Best were living very close to John. I found no other J E and Joe D Castellaw in Crockett County. My theory is that Joe was orphaned before 1870 and was temporarily staying with George and Mary. Then, sometime between 1870 and 1880, John took him in. It's also possible that Joseph was George and Mary's son and for some reason he was adopted by John.
John's second wife, Mattie, died in June of 1886.
Marriage records show a J E Castellaw and a Mrs. Nannie C Gray marrying Oct 8 1886. This may or may not be John.
Marriage records show a J E Castellaw and a N M Castellaw marrying Oct 25 1888. This may or may not be John and may or may not be his sister-in-law Nancy M Johnson Castellaw.
