Notes

In 1900, Jeremiah Fletcher Castellaw and his wife, Mary, donated the land west of the Holly Grove Baptist Church in Haywood County, Tennessee. This land was to be used for the cemetery. According to the Holly Grove Church booklet, the deed can be found at the Haywood County Court House in Deed Book 26, page 257.

One of the first to be buried there was W H Watridge. William H was married to Jeremiah's sister Zilpha, and was the nephew of Dorsey Watridge. Dorsey Watridge, along with his wife, had donated the land for the Church itself (Haywood County Courthouse, Deed Book 11, pgs 45-46, dated July 23, 1886).

Jean Mann, current librarian for the Holly Grove Baptist Church, tells me that the first person to be buried there was a black vagrant. He had been found dead near the railroad tracks at Jones. Some speculated that he was a hobo that had fallen off the train. Since no one could identify him, someone suggested that he be buried in the newly formed Holly Grove Church Cemetery. Everyone agreed and he became the first buried in the new cemetery.
