Notes
Jelks moved with his parents and siblings to Texas when he was about six or seven years old. The family moved back to Tennessee about 1900, except for Jelks' brother, Jack, who was the owner of a drug store in Ennis. In September 1903, The Brownsville TN States Graphic mentions that Jelks is in Ennis, Texas, going to school. He would have been fourteen.
