Notes
J C Castellaw was the owner of the Castellaw Drug Store on Knox Street in Ennis, Texas. The store was in operation from 1895 until his death in 1951. I was told by three different people that the building still stands and is now occupied by a group of lawyers. Upon examining the building, which was down the street from the post office, on the corner, I found that it was Calhoun's Drug Store and not Castellaw's. Castellaw's Drug Store was opposite the post office, according to old advertisements. A bank currently occupies that entire block.
J C and Lila lived on the corner of W Baylor and N McKinney in Ennis. There are pictures of Lila and Jack in front of a wooden home, pictures of an empty lot showing the porch of that home, and then pictures taken in front and around the side of a new home, part brick and part wood. I was told their house burned. I'm not sure if it was the first house that burned or the second one, but no house is on that lot today.
According to the Castellaw family bible, Jack was born John Coleman Castellaw. The 1880 census also has him as John. By the 1900 census, he is going by Jack.
Jack's birth is recorded as Jan 15 1873 in the family bible. His death certificate gives his birth date as Jan 6 1873. The informant was his brother, Jelks. The 1900 census lists his birth year as 1873. His headstone has his birth as Jan 15 1874.
Jack and Lila's only child, Jack Pender Castellaw, was killed in a bus-train accident in 1927.
