Gilbert Rains served in the Civil War in the 33rd Tennessee Infantry, Company B. According to the National Park Service online record, he went in Brevet 2nd Lieutenant and came out 2nd Lieutenant.
Gilbert's great grandson, Joe, tells me in an email that Gilbert's unit participated in the Battle of Shiloh. Joe also says of Gilbert's service: "Understand his duty was to deliver ammo and supplies from the supply wagons to the front lines. He was shot in the foot, captured, and 'sent up North'."

"The service records for Gilbert L. Rains in Company B, 33rd TN Infantry indicate he enlisted 29 Oct 1861 in Union City, TN. He later filed for a Confederate pension in Lauderdale County, TN."
