Notes
The year and month of Frank's birth were taken from 1900 census information. Month and day were taken from a 1957 Louisiana Conservationist article on Frank. The article is titled 'Dean of the Louisiana Birdwatchers'. I believe the year of birth in the article (1872) was incorrect, based on a document that notes his age, indexes that note his age, census records that note his age and the death index, which has his age as 80 when he died.
Family sources say Frank's parents were never married. This could explain why Frank was born in Philadelphia. Mary may have been sent there to have him.
At some point, Frank was given or took on his father's last name. Charles Carroll was from a very prominate New Orleans family that did not approve of Frank or his mother. Charles, however, is with Mary in both the 1900 and 1910 censuses. In 1910, they state they have been married thirty-four years, which is how old Frank was in that census year.
Frank's name at birth may have been Frank Michael McDonald. The 1880 census lists him as Frank McDonald and the 1957 article about Frank calls him Frank Michael Carroll. He had a maternal uncle named Michael. By the time Frank married in 1896, his middle name was McDonald and he was using the last name of Carroll - Frank McDonald Carroll.
According to Joan Carroll Cruz, granddaughter to Frank, to her knowledge, Frank and Alice had no children together. She says they were married in the St James Major Catholic Church in New Orleans, in their later years.
An article on Frank Carroll was written in the April 1954 issue of The South Atlantic Quarterly. Reader's Digest condensed it and republished it in October 1954. The article was titled 'Nature Man of the Marshlands'.
Frank and Levie were called "Pip" and "Mim" by their grandchildren.
